Cutting edge technigues, which explore nature and extend the Fiber Arts... See these and other works.. A rich Scandinavian heritage, a profound love of nature and a fascination for the Fiber Arts combine to make Seija Florerus a creator of wondrous works. |
Like the amazing piece Woman on the Beach, these stunning artworks inspire the beholder on many levels. In this case, for instance, the woman introduces a series of beach scenes incorporating a glowing sunrise and picnic shoun.
Born in Finland and a former resident of Sweden, Floderus draws upon the cultures of these countries as well as her adopted home in the United States, to explore spirituality, the of time , and to convey her love of nature. You will find shapes such as leaves grass, water, eaven rocks and human shapes in my work, she says.
All the works on these pages are the result of double-weaving: Seija weaves copper wire, hand-spooled slik and sea glass, making a second pattern of pokets to hold the glass.
While she grew up wanting to be an artist, it was in America that she was encouraged to develop her unigue style and unusual use of media. It was as a student at the Rhode Island School of Design, studing classical drawing, that she began weaving painted canvases into tapestries. Her work now tipically emplois linen, silk, cotton, wool, copper and beach glass. It is only now, says Seija, having gone through so much in my life, that I can see with clarity of maturity and express this with confidence in my art.
